Wimbledon, England – Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic outlasted the top-seeded pairing of Bruno Soares and Lisa Raymond to claim the mixed doubles title in Sunday's championship match at Wimbledon.
Fresh off a runner-up finish at last month's French Open, the 40-year-old Nestor and the 20-year-old Mladenovic prevailed in a tense third-set thriller to record a 5-7, 6-2, 8-6 triumph at Centre Court of the All England Club.
The win marks the third career Grand Slam mixed doubles crown for Nestor, a Canadian doubles specialist who won the 2007 Australian Open teaming with Elena Likhovtseva and again in 2011 while paired with Katarina Srebotnik, and the first for Mladenovic, who witnessed fellow Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli take home her first-ever major victory with Saturday's straight-set verdict over Sabine Lisicki in the Ladies' final.
The 39-year-old Raymond was seeking to defend her 2012 Wimbledon mixed doubles title won with Mike Bryan. The American veteran also won the event in 1999 with Leander Paes and placed second with Wesley Moodie in 2010.
Nestor and Mladenovic entered the fortnight as the eighth-seeded tandem.
