The Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Stephen Drew on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to June 29, with a strained right hamstring.

Drew sustained the injury while legging out a double in the fifth inning of Boston's June 28 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 30-year-old former first-round pick was hitting .233 with five home runs and 31 RBI through 66 games prior to the injury.

To replace Drew on the roster, the Red Sox recalled pitcher Jose De La Torre from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 27-year-old right-hander made his major league debut on May 12 and appeared in three games with the BoSox, yielding three runs on four hits and four walks over 5 1/3 frames.
