Maryland running back Wes Brown has been arrested on charges that he assaulted a police officer and secretly recorded their conversation.

University police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Davis says Brown was arrested Wednesday after an officer tried to question him in College Park in connection with a crime in Baltimore. Davis did not have information about that investigation, and Baltimore police didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Davis says Brown assaulted an officer who tried to question him, ran away and secretly recorded their conversation with a smartphone he concealed in his pocket.

The athletics department says it's "extremely concerned" and that Brown has been suspended. Brown was the Terrapins' second-leading rusher last season, finishing with 382 yards on 90 carries.
