The Carolina Hurricanes added depth to their defense, agreeing to terms on a one-year, $700,000 contract with Mike Komisarek.

The 31-year-old Komisarek was recently bought out by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"Mike faced different circumstances and expectations in Toronto than he will in Carolina, and we feel that he has a better chance to succeed with our team," said general manager Jim Rutherford. "He adds size, physicality and leadership qualities to our defensive corps, and is a good penalty killer."

Komisarek played in just four games with Toronto during the shortened 2013 campaign.

Selected seventh overall by Montreal in the 2001 draft, the New York native has totaled 14 goals and 63 assists in 519 career games with the Canadiens and Maple Leafs.
