U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson selected his good friend Andy North to be one of his vice-captains at the 2014 matches.

Watson made the announcement Wednesday at The Greenbrier Classic, this week's stop on the PGA Tour.

"He knows what it takes to close the deal and that's what we need on the Ryder Cup team," Watson said of his new assistant. "We need players who can close the deal."

North is a two-time U.S. Open winner and those wins, in 1978 and 1985, are two of three victories in his PGA Tour career. He represented the U.S. in the 1985 Ryder Cup and went 0-3.

Watson and North are tasked with trying to get the Ryder Cup back after a stunning defeat last year. The American team squandered a four-point lead with singles to play.

"It's obviously an honor and we'll do whatever we possibly can to get the Cup where it belongs, back here at home," North said.

Paul McGinley will be at the helm for the European team when the two sides meet at Gleneagles in Scotland in late Sept. 2014. McGinley has yet to name any of his assistants.
