Writing for Argentinean newspaper “La Nación” last week, San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili essentially said he’s not done playing basketball .
“After much thinking, going over and over the bad plays, I feel better and content in spite of the bad outcome, and I find it difficult to believe that I won’t play anymore,” he wrote in La Nación, where he writes a regular column.
Ginobili, 35, admitted it took some time after losing in seven games in the NBA Finals to the Miami Heat to start looking at his future.
“I don’t feel exhausted or frustrated playing basketball, I mean not enough to say it's over. I don’t know everything; I haven’t made any decision, but I find it difficult to say I will not play anymore.”
He added: “I try not to let the tree in front of me block the forest. This is practically an unbeatable situation in sports. A moment of anger and frustration should not cloud the day-to-day and how well I am doing over here.”
Ginobili's San Antonio contract expires this summer, but he said he was positive he would play for the team next season.
“I think they want me here again; but I’m not certain because I still can’t talk to the franchise.”
Under NBA rules, Ginobili is not permitted to talk to the team right now.
Ginobili battled injuries and a declining game all season, and those struggles only became worse in the postseason. He averaged 11.5 points in the playoffs, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2003, and he committed eight turnovers in the Game 6 loss.
Many speculate that Ginobili's place among the team's Big 3, which includes Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, is likely at an end.
