The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday optioned third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Opening Day starter played 53 games this season hitting .192 with nine home runs and 25 RBI.

Red Sox manager John Farrell has decided to start Jose Iglesias at third base as of late instead of Middlebrooks. Iglesias has hit .419 with 26 hits in the month of June.

Boston transferred catcher David Ross to the 60-day DL because of a concussion. The 36-year-old appeared in 23 games this season for the Red Sox while hitting .185 with four home runs and six RBI.

The Red Sox also selected the contract of infielder Brandon Snyder to the active roster from Pawtucket, placed pitcher Franklin Morales on the 15-day DL (retroactive to June 23) with a left pectoralis strain, and recalled pitcher Pedro Beato from the PawSox.
