Maple Leafs acquire Bernier from Kings

Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for goaltender Jonathan Bernier.

Frattin had seven goals and six assists in 25 games for the Maple Leafs this past season. He tallied two assists in six playoffs games.

In 82 career NHL games with Toronto, Frattin has 15 goals and 13 assists.

"Matt is a power forward. He's got speed, he's a real powerful body, he's got good hands, he can score goals," Kings assistant general manager Ron Hextall said. "He's a gritty player, a playoff-type player."

Scrivens played in 20 games with the Maple Leafs in 2012-13, posting a 7-9-0 record with two shutouts and a 2.69 GAA. He also played in 22 games for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League this past season.

The 26-year-old Scrivens appeared in 12 games for the Maple Leafs during his rookie season in 2011-12, recording a 4-5-2 record.

"[Scrivens] was a backup there, he's got real good numbers, he's a talented guy, but I think the biggest thing about him is he's a battler," Hextall said. "He fights through, he works hard, he competes, and we feel that with Jonathan Quick he'll be a nice complement."

Bernier posted a 9-3-1 record and a 1.88 GAA in 14 games for the Kings this past season. He played in one playoff game.

Originally a first-round pick of Los Angeles in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Bernier has registered a 29-20-6 career record with six shutouts and a 2.36 GAA in 62 games with the Kings.

"It's kind of bittersweet for us," Hextall said. "Jon's been with us a long time, he's been a great solider for us, he's been a very good player for us. Unfortunately, he's stuck behind Jonathan Quick, which is a tough situation for Jon. As a sense of fairness to him and the timing we felt was best for the organization, we made the move. We wish Jon the best and thank him for everything he's done for us."

The second-round draft pick acquired by the Kings as part of Sunday's trade will be in 2014 or 2015 (Toronto's option).
