Owen Coyle has been hired to replace Roberto Martinez as manager of Wigan, eight months after Coyle was fired by Bolton.

Wigan won the FA Cup last season but was relegated from the English Premier League after finishing 18th at 9-20-9. Martinez left to become manager of Everton after David Moyes quit to replace Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Coyle guided Burnley to promotion in 2009, then moved to Bolton in January 2010.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says, "He's done it all before by taking Burnley to the Premier League. He didn't have quite the same success at Bolton, but sometimes these things go against you. I've got to say, of all the candidates to apply, I thought he was the best."

Coyle's hiring was announced Friday.
