London, England – Four top-10 ATP stars, including Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro, led the charge into the quarterfinals at the $900,000 Aegon Championships, a grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.
The top-seeded Murray saw double duty on Day 4, as the heavy British crowd favorite finished off Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a rain- suspended second-round affair from Wednesday and then dusted off Aussie Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 6-2 in a third-round bout at The Queen's Club. Mahut was the runner-up here in 2007.
The reigning U.S. Open champion and 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Murray was the Queen's Club champion in 2009 and 2011. He'll face German Benjamin Becker in Friday's quarterfinals.
Murray missed the recently concluded French Open due to a hip injury.
Meanwhile, the second-seeded former Wimbledon runner-up Berdych handled 16th- seeded Slovenian Grega Zemlja 6-3, 6-4 and the third-seeded former U.S. Open champion del Potro drilled British wild card Daniel Evans 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Like Murray, fourth-seeded world No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was also forced to win a pair on Thursday, as the flashy Frenchman opened his day with a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 second-round victory over fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin and capped his day with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 third-round decision against Dutchman Igor Sijsling.
In other third-round action involving seeds, No. 5 and reigning Queen's Club titlist Marin Cilic overcame Spanish qualifier Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, four-time champ Lleyton Hewitt knocked out sixth-seeded 2010 champion Sam Querrey of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and the aforementioned Becker upended No. 7 Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
One other third-round result saw upstart American Denis Kudla whip Frenchman Kenny De Schepper 6-1, 6-3, while two other second-rounders saw Lopez oust 11th-seeded Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and Sijsling stop 14th- seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Friday's other quarters will pit Berdych against Cilic, del Potro versus the former world No. 1 Hewitt, and Tsonga against the 20-year-old Ukrainian-born Kudla.
The 2013 Queen's Club titlist will earn $115,000.
