Crew-Fire match in US Open Cup postponed by severe weather

Severe weather in the Chicago area forced postponement of the U.S. Open Cup match between Chicago and Columbus on Wednesday night.

The fourth round Open Cup match between the MLS rivals will be played at noon (CDT) on Thursday.

Lightning was observed beginning early evening around the arena, located in Chicago's southwest suburbs. A U.S. Open Cup official said both teams agreed to the postponement for the safety of players and fans.

Open Cup rules state a postponed game must be played within 24 hours.

The U.S. Open Cup is an annual championship tournament open to any amateur or professional soccer team affiliated with U.S. Soccer, the sport's domestic governing body.

Chicago has four U.S. Open Cup titles while Columbus has won once.
