The duo last won a French Open title in 2006.
U.S. TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES TRIUMPHANT IN ROME
Justin Gatlin (Orlando, Fla.) edged-out world record holder Usain Bolt by one hundredth of a second to clinch first place in the 100-meter in a time of 9.94 seconds at the Golden Gala, held June 6 in Rome. Meanwhile, Johnny Dutch (Clayton, N.C.) won his first Diamond League event of the year - clocking in at 48.31 seconds in the men's 400 hurdles - and Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) won the men's triple jump in 17.08 meters. On the women's side, Dawn Harper-Nelson (Los Angeles, Calif.) led a U.S. sweep in the 100 hurdles in 12.65, while Brittney Reese (Gulfport, Miss.) secured her second Diamond League victory of the year in the long jump in 6.99 meters.
ARCHERY
Brady Ellison (Globe, Ariz.) won the men's recurve event, while Heather Koehl (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) beat out competitors by a 21-point margin in women's recurve at the U.S. National Field Championships and World Games Trials, held June 6-8 in Eagle Lake, Texas. Jesse Broadwater (Cumberland, Md.) won the compound senior men's title and Jamie Van Natta (Pontiac, Mi.) swept the compound senior women's title with a 57-point margin of victory.
BOXING
Team USA emerged victorious, taking home five gold medals and the team trophy at the Olympic Cup, held June 3-6 in Salinas, Puerto Rico. Light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.), light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas), middleweight Le'Shawn Rodriquez (Shirley, N.Y.) and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kan.) won gold medals on the men's side, while flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) claimed a gold medal for the women.
CYCLING
Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash.) placed eighth in the elite women's competition at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, held June 8-9 in Fort Williams, Scotland. Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif.) had the fastest time among the U.S. men to place 20th, while Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa.) finished 25th.
Team USA took home eight medals in the opening round of thePara-cycling Road World Cup, held June 6-9 in Merano and Marlengo, Italy. Highlights for the U.S. included Aaron Keith's (Woodinville, Wash.) first gold medal of the season in the men's C2 time trial. In addition, Monica Bascio (Massapequa, N.Y.) claimed gold medals in the women's H3 time trial and road race, and Jamie Whitmore Cardenas (Commerce, Calif.) and Allison Jones (Amarillo, Texas) won gold in the C3 time trial and C2 road race.
GYMNASTICS
Rebecca Sereda (Staten Island, N.Y.) won her second consecutive U.S. rhythmic all-around title with a score of 133.250 at the 2013 U.S. Rhythmic Championships, held June 5-9 in Orlando, Fla. Jasmine Kerber (Highland Park, Ill.) finished second with 130.400, while Cindy Lu (Staten Island, N.Y.) secured third place with a score of 128.400.
RUGBY
The U.S. wheelchair rugby team earned the gold medal at the Denmark Wheelchair Rugby Challenge, held June 9 in Odense, Denmark. The No. 3-ranked team overcame No.1-ranked Australia, 61-56, in the first major wheelchair rugby event since the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
SHOOTING
Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) won the free pistol and 10-meter air pistol titles at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol, held June 3-9 in Fort Benning, Ga. Other top performances included Emil Milev (Tampa, Fla.) winning the rapid-fire pistol, Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.) capturing the three-position rifle, Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) garnering the women's prone rifle title and John Joss (Fort Benning, Ga.) claiming gold in the Paralympic 10-meter air rifle prone.
SOCCER
The U.S. Men's National Team clinched a crucial 2-1 win over Jamaica at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, held June 7 in Kingston, Jamaica. Jozy Altidore (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the first goal in the 30th minute to put the U.S. in the lead. After an equalizer in the 89th, Brad Evans (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to secure the team's first World Cup Qualifying victory.
SWIMMING
Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) took home gold medals in the 800-meter freestyle, 400 freestyle, 1,500 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay at the 2013 TYR Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions, held June 6-9 in Mission Viejo, Calif. On the men's side, Tom Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif.) won both the 100 and 200 butterfly, while Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore.) won both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
TEAM HANDBALL
The U.S. Women's National Team finished ninth at the 2013 Senior Women Pan American Championships, held June 1-8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Team USA lost its first two matches to Brazil and the Dominican Republic, before dominating Costa Rica, 30-13, to secure its first win. In the final game of pool play, Team USA lost to Mexico, 30-23.
TRACK & FIELD
Paralympian Richard Browne (Jackson, Miss.) unofficially tied the world record in the men's 100-meter (T44) with a time of 10.85 seconds at the Star Athletics Sprint Meet, held June 8 in Montverde, Fla.
VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. women's beach volleyball duo of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) clinched the gold medal at the Toluca Tournament, the fourth stop of the NORECA Beach Circuit, held June 6-10 in Toluca, Mexico. The pair overcame compatriots Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) in the semifinals, before beating Martha Revuelta and Bibiana Candelas of Mexico, 15-21, 21-15, 17-15. The U.S. men's team of Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) also captured gold with a 21-17, 16-21, 17-15 victory against defending champions Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen of Mexico.
The U.S. Men's National Team defeated Argentina, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-16, at the FIVB World League match, held June 7-8 in Wichita, Kan. Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) was named player of the match with 18 points, 14 kills, two blocks and two aces.
The U.S. U-23 women's beach volleyball team of Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) advanced to the round of 16 at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships, held June 6-9 in Myslowice, Poland. After winning matches against Costa Rica and Australia, the No. 3-seeded pair fell to No. 22-seeded Christine Aulenbrock and Cinja Tillmann of Germany, 21-16, 19-21, 15-13. Both U.S. men's teams of Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.), and Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.) were eliminated in the first round.
WATER POLO
The U.S. Women's National Team earned the bronze medal with a 10-9 victory over Hungary at the 2013 FINA World League Super Final, held June 1-6 in Beijing. Both Lolo Silver (Long Beach, Calif.) and Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, Calif.) scored twice, while Tumua Anae (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted 10 saves. Team USA defeated both Brazil and Canada before falling to China and recovering to beat Hungary.
