A construction worker was killed Tuesday morning at the site of the new $1.3 billion 49ers stadium in Santa Clara.

The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. local time. The worker was at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was killed.

"The 49ers organization was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the news at the construction site," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy. The 49ers family has lost a teammate today."

Levi's Stadium is expected to open in 2014. The stadium will host the Super Bowl in 2016.
