ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Doug Marrone still isn't close to naming the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback.
At least, the rookie head coach will have a clearer picture in reaching a decision after paring the competition to rookie first-round draft pick EJ Manuel and veteran Kevin Kolb.
In opening the team's three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, Marrone considered three to be a crowd. That's why he elected to release veteran backup Tarvaris Jackson a day earlier.
Marrone said the move provides both Manuel and Kolb additional practice time heading into the start of training camp last month. One less quarterback should also make it easier on him in evaluating who wins the job.
Manuel immediately noticed a difference, saying he was able to get into more of a rhythm with the extra work.
