Bills open mandatory minicamp minus unsigned S Byrd; GM Whaley says nothing to report on talks

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley says he has nothing to report on the status of contract talks with unsigned star safety Jairus Byrd, who remains a no-show this offseason.

Whaley provided the update Tuesday after Byrd was the only Bills player absent for the start of the team's three-day mandatory minicamp. The practices are the final sessions before the Bills open training camp late next month.

Byrd is not required to attend practice because he has not signed the one-year, $6.9 million contract the Bills offered by designating him their franchise player in March. The move allowed Buffalo to retain the fourth-year player's rights before he was eligible to become a free agent.

Byrd has elected to wait in a bid to secure a long-term contract.
