Track worker at Canadian Grand Prix run over by crane, taken to hospital by helicopter

MONTREAL – Canadian Grand Prix organizers say a worker at the track hosting the race is in critical condition after he was run over by a crane removing a car from the course after the checkered flag.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

Race promoter Francois Dumontier says the man was walking beside a crane as it moved a Sauber car that had gone off the track during the race. The worker tripped and the fell in front of the crane's wheel as he was escorting the vehicle, Dumontier said. The crane operator couldn't see the man and drove over him.

Chief medical officer Jacques Bouchard said the man had broken bones but he did not know any other details about his condition.

The man was about 38 years-old and had been working at the track for 10 years, Bouchard said.
