Pablo Aimar has confirmed that he will be leaving Benfica after five seasons in the Portuguese capital.

The 33-year-old told Benfica TV: "It is a joy to have played at a massive club like this," he said. "It was always special to play at the Estadio da Luz, regardless of the opponent or the competition.

"I want to register my thanks for the way everyone treated me, for how they made me feel. I will not forget the happiness that playing in a team like this has given me."

Aimar joined Benfica in 2008 after spending the previous seven years in Spain with Valencia and Real Zaragoza, and helped lead Benfica to one league title.

The midfielder appeared in over 100 games for Benfica during his time at the club, and he is expected to continue his playing career, likely in his native Argentina.
