The St. Louis Cardinals optioned relief pitcher Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

Boggs appeared in four games since he was recalled from Memphis on May 19, including Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Boggs entered the game in the ninth inning trying to hold a 2-1 lead, but promptly surrendered a game-tying home run to Jeff Francoeur. After issuing a walk to the next, Boggs was removed from the game. The runner later came around to score off Victor Marte.

The 29-year-old Boggs was also sent to the minors on May 2. Over 18 appearances this season, Boggs is 0-3 with three blown saves and an 11.05 earned run average.

To replace Boggs, the Cardinals purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Keith Butler from Double-A Springfield. Butler has made 13 appearances for Springfield, allowing just one run over 13 2/3 innings.
