Astros' Castro tabbed AL Player of the Week

Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro has been selected as the American League Player of the Week for games played between May 20-26.

Castro became the first Astro to claim the honor since the team's move to the Junior Circuit this season after batting .579 (11-for-19) with three home runs, five RBI and five runs scored in six games. The left-handed hitting backstop led the majors in batting average, slugging percentage (1.105) and on-base percentage (.636).

The 25-year-old went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in a loss to Oakland on Saturday, then collected a career-high four hits in four at-bats in Sunday's series finale.

Others considered for the award included Detroit's Miguel Cabrera and Anibal Sanchez, Toronto's Jose Bautista, Baltimore's Chris Davis, Seattle's Kendrys Morales and Jake Peavy of the Chicago White Sox.
