Fifth seed Andreas Seppi and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt came up first-round losers Monday at the $530,000 Nice Open, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.

Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu upended the Italian Seppi 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, while Spaniard Pablo Andujar outlasted the two-time Grand Slam champion and wild card Hewitt 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club.

Additional first-round wins came for Argentine Carlos Berlocq, Dutchman Robin Haase, and Romanian veteran Victor Hanescu, who snuck past Spaniard Albert Ramos 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in Monday's nightcap.

This week's top seed, Czech Tomas Berdych, pulled out of the tournament, citing fatigue.
