Indians' Masterson named AL Player of the Week

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson has been named the American League Player of the week.

Masterson went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 20 strikeouts and five walks in two starts over 16.0 innings. This is the first time Masterson has won the award and the first for a Cleveland pitcher since CC Sabathia in 2008.

On Monday, Masterson pitched the first game of the double-header against the New York Yankees and allowed just four hits while striking out nine to deliver a 1-0 shutout win, his second 1-0 blanking of the season.

In a Sunday afternoon matchup against 2010 A.L. Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez, Masterson had the better outting with a season high 11 strikeouts over 7 scoreless innings as the Indians defeated the Mariners, 6-0.

Others considered for the award were Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, Boston's David Ortiz and Seattle's Raul Ibanez.
