Miller, Corpening among those going low at BMW

Greer, SC – Zack Miller and Franklin Corpening both fired 9- under 62s on Thursday as they share the first-round lead at the BMW Charity Pro-Am.

Miller and Corpening both played the host course, the par-71 Thornblade Club. They were joined in the lead by Hudson Swafford and Mark Anderson. They carded their 9-under 63s on the par-72 Chanticleer Course at Greenville Country Club.

Six players were two strokes off the lead. Matt Davidson opened with a 7-under 65 on the Chanticleer Course, while the other five -- Mathias Gronberg, Hunter Haas, Jason Gore, Will MacKenzie and Ben Martin -- all played the third course in the rotation, the par-72 Reserve at Lake Keowee.

Eight more players stand at minus-6, while defending champion Nick Flanagan is tied for 53rd at 3-under 68.

Miller, who has missed three cuts and hasn't finished better than tied for 60th in five starts this year, started on the back nine at Thornblade and parred his first five holes.

The 28-year-old made eagle on the par-5 15th. After another par at 16, Miller birdied the 17th and 18th to make the turn at 4-under.

Miller again notched back-to-back birdies at two and three. He posted his second eagle of the day at the par-5 fifth. Miller moved to minus-9 with a birdie at the sixth, but closed with three straight pars to end there.

Corpening, whose tie for 22nd at his first start in Chile was his best finish this year, flew out of the gate with birdies at one and two at Thornblade. Like Miller, Corpening made eagle on No. 5.

The tour rookie moved to 5-under with a birdie at the eighth. Corpening birdied the par-4 10th and followed with another birdie at the 11th. He birdied two of the last three holes to move to minus-9.

"I really didn't miss a shot. I've been playing well, but I was definitely surprised to get it to 9-under," admitted Corpening.

Swafford, last year's Stadion Classic at UGA winner, is the only leader without an eagle. After back-to-back birdies at two and three at Lake Keowee, Swafford poured in four consecutive birdies from the fifth to soar to minus-6.

The 25-year-old carded three more birdies on the back nine to grab a share of the lead.

"I had a really good day. I didn't get too overly aggressive and did all of the little things. I've really been trying to work on my course management more so than every aspect of my game," Swafford commented.

Anderson birdied four of six holes from the third to the eighth. He jumped to 6-under with an eagle on the par-5 11th. Anderson notched back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14. He birdied the 17th to get to 9-under.

NOTES: Prior to this, just three of Miller's 16 rounds were in the 60s this year and his low round was a 66 in the first round of the Brasil Classic ... Anderson and Corpening posted their career-low rounds on the Web.com Tour ... Davidson and his pro-am partner combined for a 58 to lead that portion of the tournament.
