PARIS – The French club Lyon says it is willing to replay a women's French Cup semifinal which its team won on penalty kicks because its opponent had a spot kick wrongly ruled out by the referee.
After Sunday's match at Sussargues in southern France finished 1-1, Montpellier's players thought they had won the shootout following a penalty kick by Rumi Utsugi. Her shot hit a post and then the Lyon goalkeeper before going into the net.
It was disallowed by the referee, and Lyon went on to win 6-5. Lyon says in a statement Wednesday that it suggested a replay "given the particular circumstances" of the win and in the interests of "good relations between the two clubs."
The final decision will be made by the French Football Federation.
American midfielder Megan Rapinoe plays for Lyon.
