Porto overtakes Benfica with Kelvin's late goal

FC Porto is just one win away from clinching another Portuguese Liga title after Kelvin's stoppage-time goal handed the defending champions a dramatic 2-1 win over Benfica on Saturday.

Both sides entered the contest unbeaten through 28 league games, but Benfica held to a two-point lead at the top of the table with just two matches to play.

A win at Porto on Saturday would clinch the title for Benfica, and the visitors got off to a great start when Lima put them in front in the 19th minute.

However, Maxi Pereira's own goal six minutes later had Porto back on level terms, setting up a stunning finish that could very well prove decisive in what has been an incredibly close title race.

Kelvin took a pass from the left wing and got into the penalty area, where he held off a defender and fired a low shot inside the far post, setting off wild celebrations inside the stadium.

The result means that Porto needs a win over third-place Pacos Ferreira next Sunday to secure its seventh league title in the past eight years.

Benfica has a much easier match as the club will host second-from-the-bottom Moreirense, but the Lisbon side must hope that Porto fails to win to have any chance of winning the league.

Pacos had already secured third place ahead of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Academica that saw the hosts equalize in the 72nd minute through Edinho's penalty kick.

Braga will finish the season in fourth place, but the club surrendered a 1-0 halftime lead against Nacional by conceding three goals in the span of four minutes for a 3-1 defeat.

Estoril topped Beira Mar, 2-1, on Rui Manuel Rego's own goal in the 87th minute, a first-half strike from Danilo Dias handed Maritimo a 1-0 triumph over Guimaraes, Moreirense topped Setubal, 2-1, Sporting Lisbon downed Olhanense, 1-0, through a second-half goal from Diego Capel and Rio Ave's Ahmed Mahgoub converted a penalty kick eight minutes from time to help his side to a 2-1 victory against Gil Vicente.
