Sergio Garcia fired a 7-under 65 on Friday and grabbed a 1-stroke advantage over Tiger Woods and overnight leader Roberto Castro midway through the second round of the Players Championship.

Garcia, the 2008 Players champion, highlighted his scintillating day with a 40-foot birdie putt on the eighth and closed 36 holes at 11-under-par 133.

Woods, who won this event in 2001, shot 67 for the second consecutive round and hit the clubhouse one stroke off Garcia's pace.

Castro, who carded a course record-tying 9-under 63 in his Players debut on Thursday, has one birdie through three second-round holes.

Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell both fired 66s and ended 36 holes at 9-under 135.
