Alex rescues draw for PSG against Valenciennes

Paris, France – Alex's late second-half tally rescued a point for a shorthanded Paris Saint-Germain side on Sunday as the club battled to a 1-1 draw with Valenciennes at the Parc des Princes.

A victory for the capital club would have all but locked up their first domestic league title since 1993-94, as they would have been nine points clear of second-place Marseille with three matches to play and a massive advantage in goal differential.

But the result, combined with a Marseille victory over Bastia on Saturday, sees the title race still somewhat up for grabs as Marseille is seven points back with three matches remaining.

PSG was also without the services of several key players as a result of suspensions handed out during the week for a post-match fracas with Evian last week.

Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu and midfielders David Beckham and Marco Verratti were all unavailable for Sunday's match, which started unfavorably for PSG when Gael Danic opened the scoring for the visitors in the 17th minute.

Things got even worse for Les Parisiens when Thiago Silva was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute, reducing the hosts to 10 men for the entire second half.

But the league leaders showed resolve despite being down a man and found an equalizer with seven minutes remaining as Ezequiel Lavezzi lofted it into the box and Alex was in position to nod it past Valenciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau to put the sides back on level terms.

PSG will look to close out the title race with a win over Lyon next Sunday, while Valenciennes remain well clear of the bottom three in 12th place on 42 points.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Dario Cvitanich scored twice in the second half as Nice toppled Rennes by a 3-0 count. Eric Bautheac also added a goal for Nice, which climbed into fourth place in the table with 60 points.

In Sunday's final Ligue 1 fixture, Lyon received a brace from Bafetimbi Gomis and a third tally from Yoann Gourcuff en route to a 3-0 triumph over Nancy. Lyon remains in third place on 63 points, three clear of Nice.
