Already trailing in their first-round playoff series with the Ottawa Senators, the Montreal Canadiens' task of evening this Eastern Conference quarterfinal set has become an even greater challenge.

Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien announced that forwards Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta will miss Friday's Game 2 with what is believed to be upper- body injuries.

During the regular season, Pacioretty tied for the team lead in goals (15) and paced the Canadiens in points (39), while Gionta, the Montreal captain, finished with 14 goals and 12 assists and didn't miss a game.

The Canadiens will also be without forward Lars Eller, who was released from a hospital Friday morning. He suffered a concussion as well as facial and dental fractures as a result of a hit from Senators defenseman Eric Gryba during Ottawa's 4-2 win on Thursday.
