The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contract of veteran pitcher Jose Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

Contreras made 17 relief appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies last season before having Tommy John surgery on June 20.

The 41-year-old right-hander made a combined six minor league appearances with advanced Single-A Bradenton, Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis this spring, going 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA.

A native of Cuba, Contreras owns a 78-67 record with a 4.55 ERA in 292 career games (175 starts) with the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies and Phillies.

To make room for Contreras, the Pirates optioned pitcher Jared Hughes to Indianapolis.
