Top-seeded Marion Bartoli came up an opening-round loser, while reigning champion Kaia Kanepi advanced Tuesday at the $235,000 Portugal Open tennis event.

Chinese Peng Shuai upended the former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli in 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 fashion at this clay-court French Open tune-up. Bartoli has now dropped her last three tournament-opening matches.

Meanwhile, Kanepi resumed her winning ways in Portugal with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over France's Kristina Mladenovic on Day 2.

Kanepi defeated Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in last year's finale in Estoril.

Another upset left the draw without its top-two seeds, as Poland's Urszula Radwanska tackled No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova of the Slovak Republic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

And playing for the second time in three days, former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beat Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino once again, this time 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a first-round affair. The veteran Italian also bested Dominguez Lino, in straight sets, in a championship match in Marrakech this past Sunday.

Third-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova avoided an upset by handling Israeli qualifier Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-4, while Portuguese lucky-loser Monica Puig sent eighth-seeded German Julia Goerges packing, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

In other first-round play in Oeiras, Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela overcame French qualifier Aravane Rezai 5-7, 6-1, 6-3; Romanian Monica Niculescu whipped Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-1, 6-3; Swiss Romina Oprandi leveled Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-2; and Kazakhstani qualifier Galina Voskoboeva dismissed Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-4.

This week's Portugal Open champion will pocket $42,000.
