Fifth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov and German crowd favorite Florian Mayer were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the $535,000 BMW Open.

Dolgopolov doused lucky loser and fellow Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-2, while the sixth-seeded 2011 Munich runner-up Mayer snuck past Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 7-5 on the red clay at MTTC Iphitos.

Upsets came when Czech veteran and former world No. 8 Radek Stepanek took out seventh-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and oft-injured former top-10 French wild card Gael Monfils ousted eighth-seeded Austrian left-hander Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-3. Youzhny captured this BMW event in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2007 and 2009.

Also on Day 2, Kazakhstani qualifier Evgeny Korolev dismissed former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 7-6 (7-3); Serb Viktor Troicki mauled German qualifier Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 6-2, Slovenian Grega Zemlja drilled Aussie qualifier John Millman 6-2, 6-2, and Latvian Ernests Gulbis erased Finnish veteran and 2003 BMW runner-up Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2. Zemlja is rewarded with a second-round match against top-seeded Serbian star Janko Tipsarevic, while Gulbis will encounter long-time German favorite Tommy Haas, the 2000 runner-up in Munich.

Second-round matches will come Wednesday for second-seeded two-time Munich runner-up Marin Cilic and fourth-seeded two-time Munich champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, who beat Cilic in last year's BMW finale.

This year's winner will claim $96,000.
