The Boston Red Sox activated pitcher John Lackey off the 15-day disabled list to start Sunday's series finale against Houston.

Lackey had been sidelined with a right biceps strain, an injury he sustained in his first start of the season on April 6 against Toronto. He made a rehab start last Monday for Double-A Portland and allowed three hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

The 34-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2012 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in November 2011.

Catcher Ryan Lavarnway was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to open a roster spot. Lavarnway was recalled on Thursday and did not make an appearance during his three-game stint.
