Malaga remained in the hunt for a fourth- place finish by picking up a 2-1 win over Getafe at La Rosaleda on Sunday.
The home side made the most of its aerial ability as both of its goals came from headers.
Roque Santa Cruz got Malaga off the mark in the 40th minute when he nodded home a cross from Sergio Sanchez, and Weligton made it two in the 47th minute when his glancing header from a corner kick ended up in the far corner of the net.
Getafe managed to pull one back 20 minutes from time when the ball ping-ponged around in the penalty area before being hammered into the back of the net on a volley from Valera, but it proved to be nothing more than consolation strike.
Malaga improves to 53 points to climb to fifth place while Getafe's three successive La Liga losses keep the club in ninth place on 44 points.
Real Sociedad 4, Valencia 2
San Sebastian, Spain - Real Sociedad extended its lead in fourth place on Sunday by claiming a 4-2 victory over Valencia at the Anoeta.
Roberto Soldado and Inigo Martinez traded first-half goals, but Gonzalo Castro and Imanol Agirretxe scored in the 73rd and 86th minutes, respectively, to put La Real in the driver's seat.
Jonas struck in the 90th minute to make for a somewhat nervy finish for the home side, but Agirretxe completed his brace by putting the win beyond any doubt with a goal in the fourth minute of added time.
Real Sociedad moves five points clear of fifth-place Malaga and sixth-place Valencia by climbing to 58 points on the season.
Granada 1, Espanyol 0
Barcelona, Spain - Granada lifted itself out of the relegation zone on Sunday by claiming a 1-0 victory over Espanyol at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
Nolito produced the lone goal of the affair, scoring in the 37th minute to push Granada two points clear of the drop zone with 32 points on the season.
Espanyol's five-game unbeaten run in La Liga action comes to an end as the club remains on 43 points.
Valladolid 1, Sevilla 1
Valladolid, Spain - Javi Guerra and Alvaro Negredo scored on opposite sides of halftime as Valladolid and Sevilla split the points in a 1-1 draw at the Jose Zorrilla.
Guerra opened the scoring in the 41st minute to send Valladolid into the halftime interval with the edge, but Negredo earned visiting Sevilla a share of the spoils by converting a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
The draw sees the two sides remain separated in the table by three points as Sevilla climbs to 43 points and Valladolid to 40.
