The Green Bay Packers rewarded quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a contract extension on Friday.

According to NFL.com, the five-year deal is worth $110 million. The contract is the richest in NFL history, shattering Joe Flacco's six-year, $120.6 million contract. Rodgers will earn $62 million in the first three years and $40 million this season, with his $22 million average topping Flacco's annual salary of $20.1 million.

Rodgers, 29, is entering his ninth season with the Packers after being selected 24th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. Since becoming the team's starter in 2008, Rodgers has thrown for 21,332 yards, which is the most in NFL history for a starting quarterback in his first five years under center.

"Aaron is a true professional and a special player," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said. "He works hard, is humble, and is focused on his actions, on and off the field. He is an excellent teammate and pushes himself and others to be the very best. We are happy to reach an agreement to extend his career with the Packers."

The California product, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl three of the past four seasons, passed for 4,295 yards last season to go along with 39 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.

For his career, Rodgers has completed 1,752 passes for 21,661 yards, 171 touchdowns and 46 interceptions.
