David Luiz scored from a brilliant free kick with the last meaningful bit of action at St. Jakob Park on Thursday, helping Chelsea claim a 2-1 win over FC Basel in the first leg of their Europa League semifinal tie.

Chelsea grabbed the lead 12 minutes in when Victor Moses nodded a corner kick into the ground and over the goal line in the upper corner.

The Blues came close to doubling their advantage on several occasions in the second half, but they were left to rue those misses when Cesar Azpilicueta was whistled for a foul in his own penalty area in the 86th minute despite making minimal contact with Valentin Stocker.

Fabian Schar made no mistake with the ensuing penalty, firing home the spot kick to level the aggregate score.

But Chelsea managed to restore its lead with the last kick of the ball as Luiz sent a dipping free kick into the back of the net in the fourth minute of added time, giving the Blues a one-goal edge to maintain for the second leg at Stamford Bridge next Thursday.

In the other semifinal, Fenerbahce took a leg up on Benfica by claiming a 1-0 win over the Portuguese side at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Thursday.

It looked like it wouldn't be Fenerbahce's night after Baroni Cristian struck the post with a penalty kick in first-half stoppage time, but the home side managed to get the win thanks to a 72nd-minute goal from Egeman Korkmaz.

Benfica will host Fenerbahce in the return match, slated for next Thursday.
