Creighton's Doug McDermott has decided to return to school for his senior year.

McDermott, a consensus All-American this past season, made the announcement Thursday. He said he considered early entry to the NBA Draft, but wanted to play one more year in college.

"I went back and forth on this a lot," said McDermott. "The NBA can wait. I feel like I'm not 100 percent ready, emotionally and physically. I might as well stay another year, improve my game, improve my body and have the (best) year of my life."

The 6-foot-8 Iowa native was a finalist for numerous awards, including the Wooden, Naismith and Robertson honors. He was the second-leading scorer in the nation, averaging 23.2 points, and also contributed 7.7 rebounds in 36 games.

Only Virginia Tech's Erick Green had a better scoring average at 25.0 points per game.

McDermott said playing another season for his father, Greg, and the lure of playing in the Big East also played a part in his decision. Creighton is leaving the Missouri Valley Conference for the new Big East next year.

"Not a lot of people can say they played in two different conferences," said McDermott. "People will probably doubt us a little, but we have enough guys returning and some guys coming in that can help us."

McDermott is already Creighton's all-time leading scorer and is eighth in Missouri Valley annals. He is the only MVC men's player to earn top freshman honors, newcomer of the year, player of the year and tournament MVP.

In 110 career games, McDermott has averaged 20.1 points with 7.7 rebounds.

The Bluejays were 28-8 this past season, falling to Duke in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. McDermott struggled somewhat against the Blue Devils, making just 4-of-16 shots. He still scored 21 points thanks to a perfect 12- for-12 from the stripe in the 66-50 loss.
