Klinsmann says Donovan has work to do to earn back national team spot

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann is monitoring Landon Donovan and says the midfielder has work to do to earn back his spot on the national team.

A member of the last three American World Cup teams, the 31-year-old Donovan returned to the field for the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 30 following a sabbatical of nearly four months. The U.S. team has exhibitions against Belgium on May 29 and Germany on June 2 ahead of three World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica and Honduras from June 7-18.

Speaking at a media workshop Wednesday, Klinsmann said "there are players clearly ahead of Landon Donovan right now."

Klinsmann also left open the possibility that midfielder Stuart Holden could be part of the American roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Holden resumed play in February following a knee injury that required two operations and limited him to one game in a span of nearly two years.
