Flushing, NY – The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Tuesday that pitcher Chad Billingsley will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss at least 12 months.
The news comes just two days after the team placed Billingsley on the 15-day disabled list because of right elbow pain.
Billingsley, who was slated to start Sunday against Baltimore, will undergo the surgery on Wednesday. The average recovery time is around 12 months. The righty was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two outings this season.
He missed the final two months of last season with a partially torn elbow ligament, but opted not to undergo offseason surgery. Instead, Billingsley received several platelet-rich plasma injections.
The 28-year-old last pitched on April 15, a 6-3 loss versus the San Diego Padres, and experienced tightness in his throwing arm. Billingsley took an MRI on Saturday before the team placed him on the DL. Stephen Fife replaced Billingsley in the starting rotation.
