Fernandez to take charge of Montpellier

Montpellier announced on Monday that Jean Fernandez will take charge of the club next season, replacing Rene Girard.

Girard will step down at the end of the current campaign after joining the club in 2009 and leading them to a surprise Ligue 1 title last term, the first in the club's history.

Fernandez takes over on July 1 on a two-year contract after spending time in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia as well as a number of sides in France.

The 58-year-old Fernandez inherits a team that is currently in eighth place in Ligue 1 having failed to replicate the success of last season.
