NEW YORK – Doc Rivers never questioned the Knicks' strategy of adding older players.

The Celtics coach believes veterans make a difference in the postseason, having won a title with an experienced core in Boston.

Rivers says Sunday he "thought it was a very good strategy, actually, just because of now."

It paid off for New York on Saturday, when players such as Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin keyed an 85-78 victory in the series opener.

Game 2 is Tuesday, when the Celtics will try to cut down on the costly mistakes they made in Game 1.

The Knicks were mocked for signing so many aging players in the summer, but they helped New York win a division title and proved more reliable than Boston's younger bench on Saturday.
