Toledo grabs Greater Gwinnett Championship lead

Duluth, GA – Esteban Toledo carded a 2-under 70 on Saturday and moved ahead by a single stroke through two rounds of the Greater Gwinnett Championship.

Toledo was tied for second place at the end of the first round, which concluded Saturday morning due to Friday's four-hour rain delay. He then carded three birdies against a single bogey to jump ahead at 6-under 138 through 36 holes.

Bernhard Langer, the Charles Schwab Cup points leader, charged up the leaderboard and into a share of second place with a 6-under 66 at TPC Sugarloaf. He is tied with Roger Chapman (68), Tom Pernice Jr. (68) and Mark Calcavecchia (71) at 5-under.

First-round leader Michael Allen shot 73 and fell into a tie for sixth place with Gene Sauers (68) at 4-under. Champions Tour rookie Bart Bryant (73) and Andrew Magee (71) are knotted in eighth place at minus-3. The 50-year old Bryant was out of golf for three years due to surgeries on his left wrist in 2010 and 2011.

Allen birdied his second hole to hit 5-under, but he followed with a bogey and back-to-back doubles to fall off the pace. His slide opened the door for Calcavecchia, who birdied the par-4 first to reach 5-under and jump in front.

Calcavecchia followed with seven straight pars, then went bogey-birdie around the turn, but he tripped to a double bogey on No. 11 and never regained the lead. He did manage to close with birdies on Nos. 12 and 18 to get back to 5- under.

Pernice briefly jumped in front when he picked up his sixth birdie of the round on No. 14 to reach minus-6, but he tripped to a bogey on the next hole to slip back to 5-under.

Toledo, meanwhile, steadied himself after opening with a bogey on the first. That dropped shot was his only misstep of the round, and he tallied three birdies the rest of the way, including one on the par-3 16th, which vaulted him into the top spot at 6-under. He parred out to retain the lead.

NOTES: Bryant won three events on the PGA Tour, including the 2005 Tour Championship ... The tournament is the first Champions Tour event in the Atlanta area since 2000. TPC Sugarloaf was the site of the PGA Tour's BellSouth Classic from 1997-2008. ... John Huston withdrew with a back injury shortly before the start of the first round. Chip Beck took Huston's spot and is 7-over through 36 holes.
