St. Petersburg, FL – Oakland Athletics Opening Day starter Brett Anderson left Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays after a laborious first inning.
Anderson, who has suffered through a litany of injuries during his five-year career, threw 36 pitches in the first frame as the Rays batted around and scored four times thanks to four hits and two walks.
Evan Scribner was on the mound for Oakland at the start of the second inning, and the A's later announced Anderson had sustained a sprained ankle.
On April 7, Anderson had two comebackers bounce off his left hand and wrist. He made his next start, but was tagged for seven runs against the Tigers.
Anderson, 25, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011 and made just six starts last season. The left-hander had pitched to a 4.34 earned run average through his first three outings this year.
