Florida Gulf Coast University announced the hiring of Joe Dooley on Wednesday as the head men's basketball coach.

Dooley, who becomes just the third leader of the Eagles' basketball program, spent the last 10 seasons with Kansas as an assistant and has 25 years of overall coaching experience.

FGCU recently capped off a superb 26-11 season, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles, a 15 seed, shocked second-seeded Georgetown in the second round and continued its improbable run by defeating San Diego State in the round of 32.

Former head coach Andy Enfield recently took over the same position at Southern California on April 1, after compiling a 41-28 record over just three seasons, including helping the Eagles become the first 15 seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16.

Prior to Kansas, Dooley spent one season as an assistant at Wyoming and was also an assistant at New Mexico (1999-2002). During his time with the Jayhawks, Dooley helped the program to nine straight Big 12 Conference titles, five NCAA Elite Eight appearances, two Final Fours and a 2008 National Title under the direction of head coach Bill Self.

The 47-year-old also has head coaching experience at East Carolina in which he led the Pirates to an overall mark of 57-52 over four seasons before joining the Lobos' staff.
