The Arizona Diamondbacks placed second baseman Aaron Hill on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after an MRI revealed that the 2012 NL Silver Slugger Award recipient has a fractured left hand.
Hill, who batted a career-best .302 with 44 doubles, 26 home runs and 85 RBI for the Diamondbacks last season, will be sidelined for an undetermined length of time. The veteran infielder exited Sunday's 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with what was initially described as a wrist injury that had kept him out of the starting lineup in each of the team's previous three contests.
"I was very disappointed [Monday] when I learned the extent of my hand injury," said Hill. "I am going to take some time off from baseball activities to let the break heal before starting the rehab process. I am committed to do everything in my power to return to the lineup as soon as possible."
Hill was batting .306 (11-of-36) with two homers and six RBI over 10 games so far in 2013.
Regular third baseman Martin Prado will shift to second for Tuesday's series opener against the New York Yankees, with Arizona activating shortstop Didi Gregorius from the 15-day disabled list in a related move.
Gregorius, acquired from Cincinnati in December as part of a three-team trade that also involved Cleveland, had been sidelined with a strained right elbow and batted .387 (12-for-31) with two homers in seven games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.
His addition gives the Diamondbacks the option of possibly moving current shortstop Cliff Pennington to second to help offset Hill's absence.
"We are confident that the depth we have in the middle infield will serve us well while Aaron recovers," Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said.
