New York, NY – New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending April 14.
Harvey moved to 3-0 by picking up a pair of victories this week. The hard- throwing right-hander racked up 15 strikeouts and gave up just four hits over 15 innings of work.
He became the first pitcher in modern Major League history to win his first three starts, compile at least 25 strikeouts and allow a total of six hits or fewer. On Saturday, the 24-year-old held the Minnesota Twins hitless for 6 2/3 innings en route to his third win.
The former first round pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft has recorded 95 strikeouts through his first 13 starts, the third highest total through that many starts in Mets franchise history.
Other noteworthy performances last week included New York's John Buck, Starling Marte and Jason Grilli of the Pirates, Matt Adams and Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals, Cubs' Starlin Castro, Atlanta's Evan Gattis, Chris Johnson and Paul Maholm and San Francisco's Marco Scutaro and Madison Bumgarner.
