Vinci captures Katowice crown

Italy's Roberta Vinci beat top seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic to capture the title at the inaugural Katowice Open.

The second-seeded Vinci took down Kvitova by a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 margin. The Italian won 81 percent of her first service points.

Vinci was playing in a final for the first time since winning last year's crown in Dallas prior to the U.S. Open. She improved to 8-1 all-time in WTA finals.

"I played a really good game today," Vinci said after the match. "Petra was playing very well and very aggressively in the first set, getting a lot of first serves in, but I stayed with her and won the tie-break, and things were better in the second set, probably because she was a little bit tired. But everything was working for me all week. I'm happy I was able to beat such a tough opponent and win this title."

Meanwhile, Kvitova fell to 10-3 in career title matches.

Kvitova and Vinci met for just the second time. Kvitova notched a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in the third round at Wimbledon in 2011 en route to her first career Grand Slam title.
