Four students on a New Jersey high school baseball team have been suspended over an alleged hazing incident in which a player was held down and bitten by others.

One source familiar with the incident, which occurred two weeks ago and involved Florence High School students, told the Trenton Times that the bites were severe enough to break skin.

At least one junior varsity player was bitten, another source added, who said the alleged biting was a “ritual that has gone on for years.”

The Florence Township Memorial High School is now conducting an internal review of the incident, Fox 5 reports. A student reported it to school officials.

"Our findings are that a small group of players acted in an inappropriate manner," the school district’s superintendent said in a statement.

The varsity baseball team took the field Tuesday without the four suspended players. There’s no timetable of when they will return, according to the team’s coach.
