Fourth seed Julia Goerges went by way of the upset, while sixth seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia returned to the WTA a winner Tuesday at the inaugural Katowice Open.

The German Goerges was ousted by 38-year-old American qualifier Jill Craybas 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 4-1, retired, while the 37th-ranked on-the-mend Kanepi, coming off a lengthy absence caused by an Achilles injury, clobbered Polish wild card Sandra Zaniewska 6-1, 6-1 on the indoor surface at Spodek.

Meanwhile, Slovakian qualifier and WTA newcomer Anna Schmiedlova ousted fifth- seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-0.

Also on Day 2, Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens whipped Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena- Vecino 6-1, 6-1; Israeli lucky-loser Shahar Peer outlasted Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4); Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu overcame France's Mathilde Johansson 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; Luxembourg's Mandy Minella came back to beat Serb Vesna Dolonc 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and Italian qualifier Maria Elena Camerin dismissed Slovak Jana Cepelova 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

This week's top seeds are former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Italian veteran Roberta Vinci. Kvitova will meet Japan's Misaki Doi, while Vinci will face Czech Andrea Hlavackova on Wednesday.
