St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese was activated off the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Freese had been sidelined with a lower back strain and was placed on the DL in late March. He had been battling back pain during most of spring training after falling into the seats while chasing a foul pop in a March 4 game.

The Cardinals sent Freese to Triple-A Memphis for a rehab assignment this past weekend and he was 4-for-12 in three games with four runs batted in.

Freese, the 2011 NLCS and World Series MVP, was selected to his first All-Star team last year and batted .293 with 20 homers and 79 runs batted in over a career-high 144 games.

The Cardinals optioned infielder Ryan Jackson to Memphis to open a roster spot.
