St Etienne takes over third place in Ligue 1

Bertrand Laquait's own goal handed St Etienne a 1-0 win over Evian on Sunday that takes the club into third place in the Ligue 1 table.

The match remained scoreless into the final 15 minutes, but a header from Romain Hamouma went in off Evian goalkeeper Laquait, proving to be the difference between the two sides.

St Etienne nearly took the lead before halftime when Yohan Mollo was set up by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, only for Mollo's shot to rattle the post.

But Hamouma's header helped to create the own goal 12 minutes from time, while Evian narrowly missed scoring the equalizer late on as Yannick Sagbo's header sailed inches over the crossbar from Saber Khelifa's cross.

St Etienne's win, combined with a 1-0 defeat for Lyon against Reims on Sunday, moves the club into third place on goal difference ahead of Lyon, which has lost its last three league matches.

Reims nearly scored in the 50th minute when Diego struck the post, but he drew a foul inside the area on Lyon's Milan Bisevac just one minute later, earning the Lyon man a red card.

Grzegorz Krychowiak stepped to the spot and beat goalkeeper Remi Vercoutre, moving Reims four points clear of the drop zone.

The other match on Sunday saw Lille move into the top four with a 5-0 thrashing of Lorient as Salomon Kalou scored twice.
