The already short-handed New York Yankees were dealt another blow as shortstop Eduardo Nunez was hit by a pitch in Friday's game at Detroit and was forced to leave.

Nunez is filling in for New York captain Derek Jeter, who is battling an injured ankle. He was hit by Detroit starter Doug Fister on his right pectoral muscle in the fourth inning and diagnosed with a bruised right bicep.

Nunez fell to the ground in visible agony and had to be helped off the field. He was replaced by Jayson Nix. Precautionary X-rays were negative and he will be listed as day-to-day.

Nunez took to his Twitter account and said, "Thank God the X-rays were negative, I'll be back very soon on the field. I'd like to thank all the fans for your support."
